Common Name: Western Wheatgrass

Other Names: Blue stem, Blue Joint Wheatgrass

Scientific (Latin) Name: Pascopyrum smithii

Plant Family: Poaceae (grass family)

Characteristics: It grows to about 1-3 ft. tall. Strong root system. Leafs are hairy. Purplish auricles are claw-like and clasp the stem. The leaves are flat and have a blue-green color.

 

Bloom Period:  Mid summer

 

Threats: If moisture is not medium, it won't survive. If it does not have about 8 inches of rain a year, it also won't survive. It's p.h. range should be at 4.5-9.

 

Habitat: In dry areas

rhizomatous root system and adaptation to a variety of soils makes them ordeal for reclamation in areas reserpine 12-20 inches of annual precipitation. It goes dormant during early winter. It's found in or near fine-textured soils of low areas, often in pure stands. Western Wheatgrass is very competitive with weed species but not with other species. It's worst pests are grasshoppers. It's planting season is fall. there are 115,000 seeds per pound. The planting depth is 1/2-3/4 in.

 

Interesting Facts: Western Wheatgrass is green during the summer and brown in the winter. Western Wheatgrass is available to elk and cattle all year, but this quality decreases in late summer. Weed control and fertilization will improve Western Wheatgrass stands and establishment. Western Wheatgrass commonly by Blue Gramma, Buffalograss, Blue Bunch Wheatgrass, Rough Fescue, Needlegrass, Idaho Fescue, and Prairie Junegrass. Lots of seed mixtures for range seeding use Western Wheatgrass.
