Common Name: Western Wheatgrass
Other Names: Blue stem, Blue Goint Wheatgrass
Scientific (Latin) Name: Pascopyrum smithii
Plant Family: Poacea (grass family)
Characteristics: It grows to about 1-3 ft. tall. Strong root system. Leafs are hairy. Purplish auricles are claw-like and clasp the stem. The leaves are flat and have a blue-green color.
Bloom Period: Mid summer
Threats: If moisture is not medium, it won't survive. If it does not have about 8 inches of rain a year, it also won't survive. It's p.h. range should be at 4.5-9. Grasshoppers are Western Wheatgrass's biggest pest.
Habitat: In dry areas
Interesting Facts: Western Wheatgrass is green during the summer and brown in the winter. Western Wheatgrass is available to elk and cattle all year, but this quality decreases in late summer. Weed control and fertilization will improve Western Wheatgrass stands and establishment. Western Wheatgrass commonly by Blue Gramma, Buffalograss, Blue Bunch Wheatgrass, Rough Fescue, Needlegrass, Idaho Fescue, and Prairie Junegrass. Lots of seed mixtures for range seeding use Western Wheatgrass.
